This is our first visit to Pakistan,” said a member of the Azerbaijan media delegation visiting the country these days when responding briefly to a speech of welcome. “We had heard only that Pakistan was a dangerous, terrorist country but we have found it to be a ‘jannat.’ (Paradise) Thank you for your welcome and for inviting us to your beautiful country.”
The five member delegation — four males and one female — were guests of honour at a dinner hosted by Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Mushahid Hussain, which was attended by the ambassador of Azerbaijan, Eynulla Madatli other ambassadors from the CAR’s; a representative of the Afghan Embassy, DG, CAR’s and Afghanistan, Rafi uz Zaman, Dr Dushka Syed; Senators Mashahdi and Rehana Yahya Balouch and some other guests.
Addressing the gathering, the host said Azerbaijan was an important country and Pakistan valued its fraternal and friendly ties with the people and looked forward to increased bilateral relations in all fields, which had been initiated when Azerbaijan declared independence from the collapsing Soviet Union on August 30, 1991.
Stressing that Pakistan supports Azerbaijan fully on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue — we have no links with Armenia — he spoke of the pipeline agreement that had taken place between Turkmenistan, Afghanistan Pakistan and India and the pipeline from Iran to India via Pakistan; their importance to the countries and the region, while mentioning that Iranian President Ahmednejad was to visit Pakistan briefly in a few days time.
Having the ability to make short and to the point speeches combining the important aspects of relationships between two countries and adding a touch of humour every time, he remarked on a lighter note, that soon there would be so many pipelines that there might well be a ‘pipelinistan’ soon! He concluded by hoping the delegation would enjoy their stay and take back good memories, thus promoting the cause of Pakistan.
Azerbaijan is located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea at the southeast extremity of the Caucasus. The region is a mountainous country, and only about 7 per cent of it is arable land. In the years since its independence, Azerbaijan has undergone rapid privatisation, and the IMF gave it high marks, as one of the most successful economic overhauls ever. In December of this year the new embassy of Azerbaijan will be inaugurated in Islamabad.
