Karachi plans bigger Balochistan-bound bus terminal

By Jamil Khan

KARACHI: The Transport and Communication Department (TCD) of the city district government of Karachi has planned to expand the existing terminal for Balochistan-bound buses to avoid clogging up the inner city.

The current terminal is located at Yousuf Goth on Hub River Road in Baldia Town. But the city government needs to acquire another five acres adjacent to the existing Yousuf Goth terminal, where there will be more capacity for buses and other facilities. As the land is under the control of the Katachi Abadis (slums) Department of the city government, permission has to be sought for the transfer. The kaatchi abadies department had to construct a boundary wall around the area to thwart encroachers.

Katchi Abadis DO Muhammad Rehan Khan said that they had sent this matter as a resolution to the City Council and it would be finalized in the upcoming session. After the City Council approves the transfer of the five acres, construction tenders will be invited.

The inter-city bus terminal in Yousuf Goth was the first project established by the city government for Balochistan-bound buses, in a bid to eradicate over 200 illegal bus stands throughout Karachi.

The work on this project was initiated by the previous city government in 2004
and was completed by the
present city government in 2006, at an estimated cost of Rs 140 million.

The city government has set up various facilities for visitors as well as transporters of the hundreds of large buses bound to different parts of Balochistan. They include, potable water, electricity, seating arrangements, workshops, booking offices for transporters, hotels and parking for 125 buses at a time.

To run the terminal properly and make sure management is doing its job, the city government has hired a private firm to look over the management. Thirty months ago, the city government had also announced the construction of another inter-city bus terminal on the Super Highway near Razaqabad. There has not been much reported progress on the matter. As in the previous fiscal year, the city government allocated Rs 40 million for it in the next budget.

Some 30 people were killed, some at hospitals where bombs were timed to go off when the injured from other blasts were being brought in. (Later, in Surat, a center for the world's diamond industry, a bomb was defused near a hospital and two cars packed with explosives were found in in the city's outskirts.) Investigators pointed fingers at the usual Islamist suspects: Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Bangladesh- based Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI) and the indigenous Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). But even as the police searched for clues, the Ahmedabad attacks were owned up by a group calling itself the " Indian Mujahideen. " Several TV news stations received an email five minutes before the first blasts in Ahmedabad. The message repo
