After a successful experiment in the NWFP, the stage is set to stabilise Balochistan through political means. Official sources told TheNation on Friday that the coalition government had launched efforts to bring the political forces in Balochistan on board to stabilise the troubled province.

Apart from releasing political prisoners and tracing missing persons, the federal government has decided to do its utmost, including payment of compensation to the affected families as part of a well-planned strategy to bring the province back on path of progress and prosperity.

The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani gave a detailed briefing to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on security situation in Balochistan. The briefing was a sequel to an earlier briefing given on FATAs security situation last month.

General Kayani underlined the significance of development works initiated by the government with the assistance of the Army and Frontier Corps to improve the living conditions of the people in the province.

The Prime Minister emphasised the need to combine the efforts of all elements of national power towards the attainment of peace and progress in Balochistan through a comprehensive strategy based on political engagement, economic development and use of minimum force if required.

The Governor Balochistan Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raeesani, Chief Secretary Balochistan, Secretary Interior, IG Balochistan and other senior officials also attended the meeting. In another development, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also held a meeting with Balochistan Governor and the Chief Minister and reiterated the federal governments commitment in redressing the grievances of the people of Balochistan through various steps to improve the situation.

While talking to the Governor and Chief Minister at the PM House, the PM said a new strategy was under formulation in consultation with representatives of the provincial government for dealing with the issue of law and order in the province. He said the political forces in the province have to play a role in this regard, as it would improve the security and protection of the citizens.

The Governor and CM Balochistan also briefed the PM about the supply situation of wheat and flour in the province. The governments decision of providing 100,000 tons of additional wheat to the province to meet its requirements was also appreciated in the province.

The PM said the government was keeping a close watch on the wheat situation all over the country and would provide more wheat to Balochistan if required. He directed the provincial government to take steps for stopping smuggling of wheat across the border in coordination with law enforcement agencies.

These are the kind of circumstances when army need to show their resolve of not meddling in the political sphere of the country. No doubt that there will be people in the corridors of power and beyond who will be urging the army to step in and ‘save’ the country but let me tell you that country will only be saved if army stays away and let the politicians decide the future of the country, even if it means that there will be clashes on the streets of Islamabad. With free media in place, people are watching with open eyes the parts being played by each and every individual in this current saga. They know who is right and who is wrong and they will eventually decide who stays in power when the next general election comes. Who said that democracy was and orderly and pretty business ; it is anything but. Democracy ...
