The USA: Hurtling Towards A Catastrophe, Head On

By G. Asgar Mitha

Several years ago, maybe 1995, I remember reading an article in the Pakistani daily newspaper “The Dawn” titled “Jews Rule America”. The article was written by the late Dr. Eqbal Ahmed who passed away in Pakistan in 1999 from heart failure. Dr. Ahmed, in his article wrote as an opener that the title was not his. It was borrowed from a Tel Aviv newspaper he read on an airline en route to his destination. In fact, the contents of the article, as I remember correctly were borrowed from a sermon given in a synagogue by a Rabbi. Dr. Ahmed was not anti-Semitic or anti –Israeli and for the matter of fact neither am I. A nation has all rights to exist. What follows is what I, too, recently read in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Most Muslims are not anti-Israeli. Like any Jew, every Muslim wants to live in peace and that is what 95% of the world’s human beings also aspire. For both Jews and Muslims, the greetings are Shalom or Salam meaning peace. Unfortunately, war is thrust upon people not by ordinary criminals but by criminal governments, not only on populations outside their borders but also within, for economic and political reasons, to hold power and suppress opposition to their irrational policies.

A similar Jews-rule-America theme was published by Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz correspondent, in an article titled “First thought on most Jewish Congress ever: Wow. Second thought: Oy” on March 19, 2008 (Adar2 13, 5768 by Jewish calendar) http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/810011.html. Mr. Rosner writes that 43 legislators occupy the US Congress and Senate. Wow! (or Oy). He correctly claims that just 2% of the US population of Jews occupy 13% of the Senate and 6% of Congress. On further reading, it is mentioned that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the first speaker to have Jewish grandchildren. Oy! As if this is not enough Amir Uren another correspondent wrote on June 10, 2008 Haaretz that General Norton Schwartz will be the first Jewish pilot to have been nominated by Defence Secretary Bill Gates as US Air Force Chief. All this is fine because the best deserve the best. The United States of America is a meritocratic society. Gen. Schwartz and the legislators are not the only Jews. There Ben Barnanke, the current Federal Reserve Chairman and his predecessor Alan Greenspan also. Who can deny that they’re great economists? It takes brains to fiscally manage a superpower.

In all perspectives, the Jews have contributed to making the US a great country. The list of Jewish scientists, doctors, engineers, academicians and economists is long and noteworthy.

What was interesting was the talkback from Mr. Rosner’s article that touched upon anti-Semitism backlash. Israel’s Ambassador to the US, Salai Meridor, attending a National Jewish Democratic Council meeting, stated that these legislators are first committed to America, then to the Jewish citizens of US and finally to Israel. So basically, the legislators have to tow the US policy towards Israel and, Israel is ruled by Zionists and most interestingly not only by Jewish Zionists but also Christian Zionists (collectively referred as neo-conservatives) George Bush, Dick Cheney, the ultra-rightist evangelists Billy Graham and the bloodthirsty John Hagee among others. What is scary is not the Jews of USA or Israel, the peace loving people, but the right wing Zionists. I did read that something like 70% or so of Israelis favour peace talks with Hamas. That’s because they want to live in peace and let live in peace. Why else?

The Arabs have been brought down on their knees after three wars they lost. Egypt and Jordan have recognized Israel. All the GCC countries want to recognise Israel and now Syria too is serious after the unilateral bombing of an alleged nuclear facility. Iraq and Afghanistan are occupied so why should their appended leaders deny the existence of Israel? Pakistan has nuclear deterrence not because of threat from Israel but that from India and, without doubt, if the other Arab countries recognize Israel’s existence, Pakistan will be left with no option but to kowtow for survival. That finally leaves us with three entities to account. Those are Iran, Al Qaeda and the rest of the terrorist thugs wherever they are. So here I thank Mr. Rosner for providing me the idea to present to US and Israel, for achieving the ultimate global peace. No wars and destruction for me and everyone else on the earth. Shalom, Salam and peace.

Let’s try an optimistic approach to achieving peace. Iran is no threat to Israel’s security and all diplomatic and political signals that have emanated out of Tehran point to the fact that they want the US to participate in the on-going negotiations along similar lines as with N. Korea. Multi-partite talks, under the auspices of IAEA, could include US, Israel, China, Pakistan, Germany, UK and S. Arabia as confidence building measures. Tehran does not feel comfortable with EU simply because of the hawkish attitudes of Germany and UK as they’ve collaborated with the US in its previous war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Iran agrees to stop its enrichment, and no doubt they would, under specific guarantees and the condition that the Palestinian people are provided a homeland then Hezbollah and Hamas would cease to be terrorists. But, of course, in order to achieve lasting peace in the region and security for Israel, the US will have to leave Iraq and Afghanistan in which case Al Qaeda would cease to exist. No occupiers, no terrorists.

There are certain downsides to the optimism as a peace will lead to an end to American imperialism and dream of a greater Israel encompassing a homeland from the Euphrates to the Nile, economic (oil included) and political subjugation of Muslims, contraction of the western defence industries which makes them powerful masters and an end to their politico-criminal activities within their borders. Peace is within reach, security for Israel can be guaranteed but for America to be relegated from its current role as a superpower may be unacceptable to it. If it does not relegate the role then the US is doomed as was Rome. In order to understand the phenomena of how the Roman Empire ceased to flourish, one has to read Cullen Murphy’s book “Are We Rome? The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America”. What is most interesting is that the ancient barbarians, analogous to the modern terrorists, brought an end to the Roman Empire. The Zionists have a choice, for the survival of the US, Israel and others. Seymour Hersch correctly said that you don’t let your friends get behind the wheel if they are drunk. I quote prophetic words from Mr. Murphy’s book that “either we don’t see what’s coming at us, or we don’t see what we’re hurtling towards”. That is sheer blindness and all empires are and have been blinded by power. America is blinded by its own misconceived idea that the modern barbarians are coming to destroy it. America does not realise it has gone to the land of the modern barbarians---the terrorists to weaken itself. It could learn a lesson from ex-USSR

The Zionists, in their religious fervour, hold a misconception that the US can provide the ring of security for Israel by buying out the weakest Arab countries and, occupying and invading other stronger Arab and Muslim countries under fabricated pretexts. The fact of the matter is that it is only by peace that Israel can guarantee itself the security it needs. It is still not too late. The Zionists must understand that US is being economically weakened and that it is only a matter of time before the US will be unable to provide the security for Israel and maybe for the peace loving Jews in USA.

India: The Terrorists Within

A day after major Indian cities were placed on high alert following blasts in the IT city of Bangalore, as many as 17 blasts ripped through Ahmedabad, capital of the affluent western Indian state of Gujarat . Some 30 people were killed, some at hospitals where bombs were timed to go off when the injured from other blasts were being brought in. (Later, in Surat, a center for the world's diamond industry, a bomb was defused near a hospital and two cars packed with explosives were found in in the city's outskirts.) Investigators pointed fingers at the usual Islamist suspects: Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Bangladesh- based Harkat-ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI) and the indigenous Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). But even as the police searched for clues, the Ahmedabad attacks were owned up by a group calling itself the " Indian Mujahideen. " Several TV news stations received an email five minutes before the first blasts in Ahmedabad. The message repo...

Pakistan Army Must Not Intervene In The Current Crisis - Who To Blame For the Present Crisis in Pakistan ?

By Sikander Hayat Another day of agony and despair as Pakistanis live through a period of uncertainty but still I believe that army must not intervene in this crisis. These are the kind of circumstances when army need to show their resolve of not meddling in the political sphere of the country. No doubt that there will be people in the corridors of power and beyond who will be urging the army to step in and ‘save’ the country but let me tell you that country will only be saved if army stays away and let the politicians decide the future of the country, even if it means that there will be clashes on the streets of Islamabad. With free media in place, people are watching with open eyes the parts being played by each and every individual in this current saga. They know who is right and who is wrong and they will eventually decide who stays in power when the next general election comes. Who said that democracy was and orderly and pretty business ; it is anything but. Democracy ...
