Shiv Sena has threatened Shahrukh Khan, the most famous Bollywood actor and an Indian Muslim, to leave India and go to Pakistan. The threats came after Shahrukh advocated the return of Pakistan cricketers to IPL. His film “My Name Is Khan” is due to be released but Shiv Sena has threatened any cinema owners who show this film with death. His posters are being burned everywhere in the Mumbai city and he is being asked to retract his statements or else.
This is not the first time anything like this is happening. Every time an Indian Muslim says or does something which anti-Muslim fundamentalists of India don’t like, he or she is branded a traitor. If this is happening to the most prominent Indian Muslims, just imagine the plight of those who do not have a voice.
Shiv Sena and organisations like it sometimes let slip the veil from the real face that “shining India” does not want anyone to see. Off course India is shining but only for those who are the right caste, religion and region. If people like Shabana Aazmi can’t buy a house of their liking in Mumbai just because they don’t have the right religion than there is a problem.
Talking about relatively recent events, every time there is a Gujarat massacre, a Malegaon bombing, a samjhota express bombing, a babri mosque demolition etc. there is still further marginalisation of Muslims. Sachar commission’s report puts the plight of Indian Muslims in very stark terms. The report suggests that Muslims are even below Dalits in the social & economic structure of India. They are portrayed as outsiders who at best can be tolerated but not given the equal status.

sikander,it might not be an absolute indicator, but you would have noticed that the shiva sena is not winning elections.
ReplyDeleteThere is no generalised condition of muslims being marginalised.there are some pockets where right wing forces are dominant but even within those areas,i can confidently say that the muslims will not be feeling removed from the system.they are as much a part of the country as any hindu or christian.
some groups have traditionally been out of sync with education and hence miss out on the fruits of development.
even this is not uniformly evident across the country.
the system moves and redresses these issues.
