Will Population Explosion Cause More Migration To The West? Did Migration Play A Role In Brexit and Trump Victory?
By Sikander Hayat
People of Britain made a calculation that getting out of EU would be a painful task in economic terms but in the long run it will be a good for the social cohesion of the country. Brexit is an attempt by the people of United Kingdom to save themselves from the impacts of globalisation. World is overpopulated and Africa is fast becoming the epicentre of overpopulation with populations doubling in twenty years in some countries. India is not far behind in overpopulation and it has been
estimated that it will overtake China in next few years. India is presented as a shining example by some economists and is shown as a counterweight to China in the greater South East Asian region but in terms of controlling population, educating it and pulling masses out of poverty, China has done remarkably better than India. In fact, China does not export its people to other parts of the world like India does.
Population increases are linked to lack of education/under education, early marriage, poverty, lack of healthcare facilities and lack of contraception among other factors. India, Nigeria, Mexico and Brazil are among the most over populated countries in the world. India’s population is 1.324 billion (2016), Nigeria’s population is 186 million (2016), Mexico’s population is 127.5 million (2016) and Brazil’s population is 207.7 million
(2016). These countries are not the only ones with large populations but the rate of increase in their population is alarming as lot of factors required for stable democracies start to degrade under the weight of extreme overpopulation. Some of these factors are as follows:
1. Lack of land which can be used to grow enough food for this extra population.
2. Degradation of water resources as more water is required to grow more food to feed more people.
3. Health facilities cannot cope with extra people as more people need more doctors and hospitals. This results in increased mortality rate in young and force parents to have more children as an insurance policy.
4. Overpopulation results in degradation of forests, eco systems, animal habitats, mass extinction events both on land and sea.
5. More jobs need to be created to employ extra population and in today’s globalized economy, it is not possible to create jobs with ease when there is always someone out there who can do your job more cheaply.
6. New transport infrastructure is required to accommodate more cars, buses, planes etc.
7. More housing is required for more people
These are only some of the factors which are a direct result of overpopulation. Failed states become overpopulated because these states cannot provide an insurance policy to their populations that they will be cared for in their old age. As a result, people have more children as a safety net. On this yardstick, states like India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Niger and many others are failed states.
These failed states cannot feed their people, cannot provide them welfare support in their old age, cannot provide education and health facilities to their masses and as a result more children are born and vicious cycle continues. I would strongly argue that a definition of failed state should include any state which cannot control its population as overpopulation is the biggest cause of other failures.
We talk about economic miracle of China but we forget that it happened to large extent because its leadership decided to control its population. Humans are like any other organism, as we can only keep growing to the extent where we overwhelm our ecosystem and then the inevitable happens.
Is it a coincidence that people from developed economies do not emigrate on levels seen from underdeveloped countries like, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mexico, Brazil and other similar countries. It seems that these countries are driving the population growth as a result emigrating in ever greater numbers to countries in EU, United States, Canada and Australia. These flows cannot continue indefinitely as eventually destination countries will start having the same issues of overpopulation which will overwhelm their welfare systems and other infrastructure.
